EDWARD SUZUKI

Recipient of Chicago Athenaeum Green
Good Design Award 2011, 2016
PROFILE  | Edward Suzuki worked alongside master architect and futurist Buckminster Fuller while attending Harvard on a Fulbright scholarship. Perhaps that’s one reason he’s a self-proclaimed student of life, regularly contemplating the structure of the atom, the environment, philosophy and the metaphysical.

His work has brought him well over a dozen major awards here in Japan and the United States. He won the prestigious “Chicago Athenaeum GREEN GOOD DESIGN Award”in year 2011 from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design for a house he designed in Shimogamo, Kyoto.

He wins the prestigious award again this year in 2016, for his completed “International School of Asia, Karuizawa (ISAK)”.

KEYNOTE SYNOPSIS | GOoD DESIGN FOR A BETTER WORLD
Learning the concept of Interface from traditional Japanese design vocabulary:
1) separating the inside and the outside
2) fusing the inside and the outside
3) expanding on the concept beyond inside and outside.

KO SHIOU HEE

Recipient of 2008 FIABSCI award for Best Hotel Development (G Hotel, Penang, Malaysia)

PROFILE  | Ko Shiou Hee is the founding principal of K2LD Architects and a member of the Singapore Institute of Architects.

He worked at Morphosis in Los Angeles, and KPF and I.M. Pei & Partners in New York.  On his return to Asia, Shiou Hee practised for 2 years in Japan where he refined his philosophy of “sense and sensibility” harnessing texture and emptiness, silence and light in his architectural designs.

Shiou Hee established K2LD Architects in 2001, with the Melbourne office opening in 2007.  The firm’s projects across the Asia Pacific range from commercial (offices, retail, restaurants), hospitality (hotels and resorts), institutional (schools, church) and residential.  K2LD Architects have won numerous awards, including the 2008 FIABSCI award for Best Hotel Development (G Hotel, Penang, Malaysia), and the 2014 and 2015 Singapore Design Award for “Asia Top Design Practice”.

Having developed a successful modern architectural approach which addresses local climatic conditions, Shiou Hee now contemplates the future of architecture and urbanization and “building less for a better world”.
