Synopsis:
Designing modern housing has always been competitive as builders and buyers alike grew more passionate about trendy and urban designs. This positions beauty as an essential element for home buyers. For building designers, various considerations are weighted in to achieve that on-trend design, such as the creative use of building materials, modular building methods, affordability, and long lastingness. In this session, our guest speakers will be covering a stretch of topics; beginning with the fundamentals and aesthetic possibilities of steel solutions, to how these solutions contribute to the design thinking and construction of some on-trend housing projects. We’ll dwell deeper into both design and technical aspects, spanning across the colours, finishings and technology of coated steel, and how it could coalesce with different steel solutions to meet aesthetics and performance requirements. We’ll also explore contemporary building methods in achieving modern homes with more affordability, efficiency, and durability.
Jack Chum
Technical Marketing Manager, Jack Chum graduated from the University of Science in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Material Engineering, B.Eng (Hons). He has more than 19 years of working experience in steel-related industries. Currently, he is the Technical Marketing Manager of NS BlueScope Malaysia responsible for Product Innovation and Technical Services covering Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and South Africa.He is actively involved with professional bodies such as Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM), The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), and government bodies such as Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) in conducting technical seminar regarding coated steel for metal roofing, wall cladding, and lightweight structural steel application.He is also a member of the Technical Committee (TC) with Jabatan Standard Malaysia in setting up Malaysian Standard (MS) for Alloy Steel and Coated Steel such as MS 1196, MS 2657, MS 2383, and SIRIM Eco-Label for Coated Steel.
Ar. Gerald Chin
Founder-CEO, With more than 20 years of professional practice, Ar. Gerald Chin is a chartered professional architect registered with Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia, Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia, Royal Institute of Australian Architects & Royal Institute of British Architects.He has professionally managed various typologies of building covering housing schemes, public schools, individual bungalows, redevelopment of commercial buildings and factories. Apart from his professional practice life, he has given talks to masterclass architectural students in the USM School of Architecture and was a guest presenter in the Pecha Kucha Penang Chapter.As a side interest, he manages his own wine restrobar and was actively promoting the local performance art scene in Penang. He currently still manages his professional practice and is now the Ceo of Slimhaus Technology Sdn Bhd. where he leads the design, research & development, planning of the overall product procurement and business direction. It is his undying passion for bringing premium quality housing available to the masses minus the premium price tag that has finally brought his idea of affordable IBS to fruition.
