Synopsis
In ‘The Making of a Book’, Professor Robert Powell takes us through the unique journey of writing his latest architecture book, ‘The Tropical Malaysian House 1’. He visits each building and upon arrival will search for the heart and centre of each house where he will sit, comprehend the spaces, sketch and then write from his sensory experiences of the 25 exemplary houses. He demonstrates how they reflect the diverse contemporary lifestyle of Malaysia, and highlights the essential qualities of each house in parallel with some of his observations on what constitutes good tropical architecture in South East Asia. The houses featured in ‘The Tropical Malaysian House 1’ include works by Wooi Lok Kuang, Eleena Jamil, Lee Cherng Yih, Dr Tan Loke Mun, Adela Askandar, Ang Boo Chung, Chan Mun Inn and Dr Ken Yeang.

Book Summary
The 25 houses in this book illustrate some of the most innovative and engaging residential projects by architects and designers in Malaysia, completed in the decade between 2009 and 2018. A strong ecological message emerges responding to the question what is a modern ‘tropical’ house. Collectively, the houses in the book serve as a primer for anyone embarking on a new residence.
